Cancun is one of Mexico's most popular resort and party cities, so it's no surprise that Cancun safety is a top concern for visitors of all ages. In this guide, we look into staying safe in Cancun and a few tips and tricks to ensure your visit is free from problems.

Is Cancun dangerous?

Theft from your possessions and bad weather are the two biggest threats you'll face. Many visitors to Cancun underestimate the difficulty and danger of the undertows, so heed warnings to stay out of the water when red flags are flying.

When travelling with young children or people who are not strong swimmers, extra caution should be exercised. Last but not least, it doesn't take long for people to make off with your wallet and phone if you leave them unattended on the beach.

Although you may encounter thieves in Cancun, the city's low crime rate means that you can stay safe by taking sensible precautions. You should minimise what you have on you and stay away from sketchy areas when you're out and about in the city.

It's important to think about both human and natural threats to your safety in Cancun. Safety issues can also arise from the local climate and water supply.

In particular, Cancun falls victim to hurricane season in the summer and early fall. Hurricanes are especially dangerous in the summer and early fall in Cancun.

Food safety in Cancun

It's highly recommended that you try some of the delicious street food Cancun has to offer. When doing so, it's best to find a stand that's busy and where the food appears to be freshly prepared. Are there large quantities of pre-cooked meat at that taco stand? Do you know if the vendor also prepares the food or if there is a separate kitchen involved? Such practises are common, but those with weak stomachs should probably avoid them.

Furthermore, not all Cancun tap water is drinkable, so if your hotel doesn't provide filtered water, you should stock up on bottled water

You should also stock up on bottled water if your hotel doesn't provide filtered water because not all tap water in Cancun is safe to drink.

Crime in Cancun

It's no secret that Cancun's crime rate has been on the rise for some time now. Gun violence in particular has increased as drug cartels have spread into the city.

Although more violent crimes have been reported, those out for a fast buck are the ones most likely to victimise you. Keep your wits about you and you won't fall victim to con artists, pickpockets, or overpriced goods and services.

Keeping your money, passport, and credit cards close at hand is as easy as slipping on a fanny pack that fits inside your waistband. Unlike the traditional fanny pack, which hangs from your belt loops, this one sits inside your waistband, where it is safe from would-be thieves.

Partying in Cancun is great fun, but drinking too much can but you at risk too. Read our Cancun nightlife guide for the best spots and to make sure you stay safe on nights out in the city.

Large numbers of tourists often attract a large number of pickpockets. Pickpockets are prevalent citywide, but especially in Downtown Cancun due to the lower volume of tourists in that area.

Mindful interaction with locals is the best way to avoid looking like a tourist and getting taken advantage of. So don't carry around a big bag, and don't wear a camera around your neck.

How secure are Cancun's all-inclusive hotels?

There is no better place to stay in Cancun than the hotel zone, also known as the Zona Hotelera. In this area, you'll find only all-inclusive resorts. You won't have much need to venture into the city, as these resorts have just about everything you could want. They work double-time to keep the place free of loiterers and stragglers.

Is Cancun safe for LGBT travellers?

Countless queer travel bloggers attest that Cancn is one of the most welcoming places in Mexico for the LGBTQ+ community. After all, same-sex marriage is legal in the state of Quintana Roo, and the city's central areas are home to a number of bars, clubs, and beaches frequented by the LGBT community.

Are taxis in Cancun safe?

Cancun's local buses are cheap and plentiful, and so are the city's taxis, so having your own vehicle is unnecessary. However, taxi drivers will sometimes take advantage of tourists' presumed wealth because of Cancn's status as a tourist hub, especially in the Hotel Zone and the central downtown region. Instead of hailing a cab on the street, it is preferable to use the services of your hotel or a legitimate taxi stand.

So, Is Cancun Safe?

Cancn is a beautiful tourist destination due to its white sand beaches, ancient landmarks, and exciting nightlife. If you want to have a worry-free vacation, though, you should think about the things we covered in this article. Maintain vigilance and safe habits at all times. More than anything else, though, enjoy yourself.
