Maybe when it comes to calligraphy in the Tang Dynasty, people often think of standard script. After all, Tang standard script is the peak of kaishu development. However, in the Tang Dynasty, the development of running script was also very fast, and many famous running script calligraphers and calligraphy works were born.
Today, let's take a stock of the top ten running script calligraphy works in the Tang Dynasty, including three works of Yan Zhenqing.
1、 Yan Zhenqing's "memorial to nephew": this work, together with Yan Zhenqing's "post for seat" and "report to Uncle", is called "three drafts of Yan's", which jointly represents the highest level of Yan Zhenqing in running script. It is known as the "three great running script in the world" together with the Lanting Pavilion preface of Wang Xizhi in the Eastern Jin Dynasty and the Huangzhou cold food post of Su Shi in the Northern Song Dynasty. It is also known as the "second running script in the world", and one of the "top ten famous posts in China".
2、 Yan Zhenqing's post for seat: this work, together with the manuscript for niece and the manuscript for uncle, is called "three drafts of Yan's family", which jointly represents the highest level of Yan Zhenqing's running script. The post for seat is also called "Shuangbi" in running script together with Wang Xizhi's Preface to the Orchid Pavilion Poems. Mi Fu calls it Yan Zhenqing's first in running script. In the Qing Dynasty, He Shaoji believed that this work should be above Lanting Pavilion preface.
3、 Ouyang Xun's Zhongni dream laying post: this work is known as the pinnacle of Ouyang Xun's running script, one of the "top ten famous Chinese books", and also one of Ouyang Xun's four handed down inks, which has always been highly praised. Later generations said that this work inherited the "King" book and influenced the "rice" book, which is an indispensable part of running script's development history.
4、 Liu Gongquan's "Mengzhao post": also known as "Hanlin post", the shape of the post is different in length and width, or broken or connected, the ink is light and heavy, the line is mainly Central, full and thick. In the way of writing, there were two Wang as the representative of the "straight down", and Yan Zhenqing as the representative of the "Zhuan Jie Zhuan". Later generations called it "the sixth running script in the world".
5、 Ouyang Xun's "Zhang Hansi's bass post": one of Ouyang Xun's only four pieces of ink. The font of this post is long, the writing force is firm and straight, the style is steep, and the spirit is exposed. There is a postscript in the thin gold body of Zhao Ji of Song Huizong on it, which is called "dangerous and strong strokes, strong and long drive". 6、 Yu Shinan's epitaph of Princess Ru'nan: Yu Shinan's walking grass masterpiece, 25.9 cm in length, 38.4 cm in breadth, paper ink, now in Shanghai Museum. It is also known as the "three drafts of Yan Family" together with the "sacrifice to nephew manuscript" and "fight for seat post", which jointly represents the highest level of Yan Zhenqing in running script. Objectively speaking, although the status of this work is not as good as the other two works, it is also one of the highest level representative calligraphy works of Yan Zhenqing in running script.
