International Chihuahua Day Origins

In 2020, international Miss. British and fitness dynamo Nadia Alterio wrote an article on her blog that deemed May 14th of 2020 to be International Chihuahua Day for years to come. In addition, the date of International Chihuahua Day aligns with her chihuahua “Teaka’s” birthday.

The History of the Chihuahua

Chihuahua’s get their name from Mexico’s state, Chihuahua. Additionally, Chihuahuas are the smallest dog breed, weighing in at 3 to 6 lbs. If a chihuahua is mixed with other dog breeds, they can grow to weigh more.

Chihuahua’s were derived from the Mexican Toltecs in the 9th century A.D. However, it wasn’t until 1904 that the American Kennel recognized these smal, but mighty pups.

Chihuahuas have small bodie,s but their heart, and personalities are large. Additionally, in recent time,s chihuahuas have been trained to be service animals and therapy pets. On occasion, they can be seen working small tasks on farms, such as hunting mice.

Most often, you will find chihuahuas in the laps and hearts of those who adore this tiny breed with a larger-than-life view of the world.

5 Amazing International Chihuahua Day Facts

You May Pronouncing Chihuahua Wrong

Many people believe that chihuahua is pronounced “chi-wow-wa”. However, the correct pronunciation is spoken as “shee-wow-wa.”

They Never Grow Up

Chihuahuas stay small their entire life. Therefore, if you’re looking for a furry pal that won’t drag you around the yard, is easy to handle, and fits into your hand, a chihuahua may be a great choice. Additionally, their larger-than-life personalities will keep you laughing and smiling even when days are rough. Oftentimes, they are compared to toddlers as most have the personality of one.

They Have a Long Life

Most chihuahuas live to be 13 to 15 years old. In some cases, they can live longer. Additionally, they make a great companion to grow up with.

They Love to Play Dress Up

If you’re looking for a pet that will enjoy getting dolled up, you may have met your match. Most chihuahuas love to get glammed up for a night out on the town or a cozy night in. Additionally, you may want to ease them into it. Some may not be as cheery about dressing up.

They Have Professional Degrees in Cuddling

If you’re looking for a dog breed that won’t crush you when it comes to cuddle time, a chihuahua is a great choice. They love to be held and cuddled by their owners. Additionally, they make a great date to snuggle with on frigid days.

International Chihuahua Day is a fun time to celebrate with your beloved pup. Remember to hold them close and remind them why you love them!
