Moose Sighting
At the start of this video posted at the top of this blog post, we are taken to a lake. There is a beautiful view of canoes, trees in the distance, and a picnic area for families to enjoy a cookout. Close to the person filming, we see a dog that is walking the shoreline and enjoying the cool breeze and the water that rushes up on his paws. However, this video is not about this dog.
Suddenly, the camera zooms in, and we see a moose run into the water! Where one might think he was heading somewhere, we quickly see that isn’t the case at all. This giant moose is simply looking for fun. We see him powering through this water as though it is nothing. He splashes the water up and enjoys the feeling of letting it rain down on him.
As this moose moves around, we quickly see there is a family up by this picnic area that is closely watching this moose. The mother looks as though she is filming, and the kids are running around screaming in excitement at seeing just a giant animal up close.
Is Moose a Cow or Deer?
When animals have a lot of similarities with how they look, it can be easy to get confused about which family they belong to. If that confused you, don’t worry; let’s dive into what “family” means for animals.
Family is defined by Biology Online as “A taxonomic rank in the classification of organisms between genus and order…In taxonomy, a family is more precise than orders but less precise than genera.”
Cows (Bos taurus) belong to the family Bovidae. Deer (Odocoileus virginiana) belongs to the family Cervidae. Moose (Alces alces) belong to the family Cervidae. So, now we are able to see that moose belong to the family of deer.
We can go even further to state that not only is the moose a member of the deer family, but they are the largest members of the deer family. Moose can weigh as much as 1,580 pounds. Seeing all that power running through this lake in the video above is quite amazing!
