Burmese Sighting in Florida
On Monday, October 23, 2023, a man and his wife just came home from vacation. As they pulled up to their house in Cape Coral, Florida, they noticed something unusually odd by the outside near their garage. It was a large Burmese python!
“We estimated it to be about 9 feet long,” homeowner Kevin Monroe said. “Somewhat coiled, and her head was near the garage trash can and near the door. I’ve never seen a snake that big other than at a zoo.”
Monroe’s neighbors came to help him try to capture this python. “Took a couple of us to corner it and get a hold of it, and we took care of it,” Monroe said. They reportedly took care of this by humanely killing this invasive species in Monroe’s driveway.
While this might seem cruel, they were well within their rights according to Florida’s laws. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission states, “ Live transport of pythons is not allowed. Hunting on Private Land: Nonnative reptiles like Burmese pythons can be humanely killed on private lands at any time with landowner permission – no permit required- and the FWC encourages people to capture and humanely kill pythons from private lands whenever possible.”
What Do Burmese Pythons Eat?
Burmese pythons (Burmese pythons) of the order Squamata are large pythons that can weigh up to 200 pounds and reach 23 feet in length. These pythons are carnivore eaters, which means they will eat meat.
As solitary hunters, they rely on their own strength to hunt and kill their prey. They eat prey such as mice, rabbits, chickens, and birds. An interesting fact about these pythons is that they are able to swallow animals up to five times the width of their own heads.
With up to 300,000 Burmese pythons in Florida alone, these hungry pythons are searching for food wherever they can find it. And apparently, this Burmese python in the video shown at the top thought he might be lucky enough to find some stray rodent by this vacant Cape Coral home.
