Huge Chicken Sighting in Nigeria
The next YouTube video posted at the top of this blog post takes us to Nigeria, located in Africa. If you didn’t know that chickens were in Africa, we can assure you that there are! There are actually estimated to be approximately 2.1 billion as of the year 2020, according to Statista’s 2023 report.
We want you to pause the video at zero seconds. This was our initial take on this chicken exiting the chicken coop. We see this is a chicken and are ready to watch it walk down. Now, press play.
Don’t worry; our jaws dropped open, too. The biggest chicken we’ve ever seen just plops out and seems to get bigger as it walks down the ladder and on top of the ground. It has to be one of the largest chickens in the world! This chicken’s body almost resembles one of those cowboys of old with big pants.
As the chicken walks around the yard, we get the full view of just how enormous this chicken is, not only in weight but in height as well. Suddenly, at 58 seconds, a friend joins this chicken out in the yard to peck for food. And while this second chicken is big, it’s not quite as big as the other one.
How Big Do Chickens Get?
The largest chicken on record was named “Weirdo” and was born in 1970. This chicken, which was a rooster, was a whopping 23 pounds! This rooster was apparently so big that “Grant [chicken owner] reported having eight stitches after Weirdo attacked him, and he was not able to fight him off. This giant rooster also killed two cats and injured a dog.”
But, as we can imagine, this is not the normal weight of chickens. This was absolutely an exception to the rule. Chickens (Gallus gallus) of the family Phasianidae typically only reach about 1-3 kilograms (2.2-6.6 pounds) and reach 30-45 centimeters (11.8-17.7 inches) in length.
