Before Cleveland got its name, it was called “The Western Reserve”. According to the City of Cleveland, Ohio Website, Ohio was officially founded in 1796 and incorporated in 1836. The city is named for General Moses Cleaveland, who was an American politician, lawyer, and surveyor. He was one of the people from the Connecticut Land Company that surveyed the area that would become Cleveland.

The lands that became Cleveland originally belonged to the Shawnee, Ottawa, Wyandot, Miami, and Seneca people. The first Indigenous tribe that we know inhabited the land was the Erie people. A war in 1656 between the Erie and Iroquois tribes (especially the Seneca tribe) ended up obliterating most of the Erie population. Indigenous history in the Cleveland area dates back ten thousand or more years and should not be set aside or forgotten when we talk about the history of a place.
